リズムボックスをベースに、多重録音を駆使して作り上げた宅録的サイケデリック・ソウル。淡々と反復するリズムと、そこから生まれる心地良さ。70年代のソウル周辺でここまで自然に反復の快楽を音楽に溶け込ませた作品も珍しい。エモーショナルになりすぎることなく、一定の温度で漂い続ける浮遊感がたまらない。10代ですでにアル・クーパーとの共演を経験した早熟な才能だが、本作で驚かされるのは、その先進性にある。密室的な多重録音、リズムボックス、揺らぎのある歌と演奏は、後のインディー・ローファイやドリーム・ポップの感覚と不思議なほどシンクロする。時代がようやく彼に追いついた、孤高の名盤。

Built around rhythm boxes and layers of overdubbing, Inspiration Information is a kind of homemade psychedelic soul. Its rhythms repeat with an effortless simplicity, turning repetition itself into a source of pleasure. Few artists in the soul world of the 1970s made repetition feel this natural. Never becoming overly emotional, the music drifts at a steady temperature, creating an irresistible sense of weightlessness. Otis was a prodigious talent who had already worked with Al Kooper while still in his teens, but what truly astonishes here is how far ahead of its time his vision was. The intimate overdubs, rhythm boxes, and gently wavering vocals and instrumentation seem to anticipate the sensibilities of later indie, lo-fi, and dream pop. A singular masterpiece that the world eventually caught up with.
